Internships provide great circumstances for students to grow and gather experience in their desired field, while allowing them to showcase and fine-tune their own skills. That’s why, here at Glint Advertising & Design, we believe in affording interns with opportunities to help them succeed in their classes and in the post-college world. Glint’s current student intern, Kelsey Keys, provided great insight into the process of starting a logo in the blog below: Herb Lubalin, the master of type-based logos, successfully created many designs using just an arrangement of typefaces on a page. A common assignment among many design students is to design a logo using only the Futura typeface. Embracing their inner Lubalin, students create a representation of the meaning of an assigned word, using only an arrangement of the letters. For the assignment, I was given the word “conviction.” After much contemplation, I decided to make the “T” into a gavel and the “o” into a block. And boom! I had the beginning of a great logo started. Through the development of a logo, a brand’s identity begins to take shape or is reinforced. A combination of thought and creativity for your design can help your brand stand out. When designing a logo, start with your brand and name. Think of how simply you can convey that meaning of your brand, just from letters. Then watch your logo come to life as you play with different typefaces, colors, and symbols.
